WHAT IS AN AUTOCROSS?

Autocross is a timed event that pits a driver's skill and a car's handling ability against the clock. A course is laid out using pylons (traffic cones) and the goal is to travel from the starting line to the finish in the lowest amount of time. A time penalty is incurred when cones are hit, so precision and control are very important. "Autocross" and "Solo" are used interchangeably - "Solo" is the SCCA's specific brand of autocross.

Autocross is one of the cheapest, safest and easiest motorsports to participate in. Our fees (listed below) are low, and no special safety gear (such as roll bars, fire suits, etc.) is required except a helmet (and the Central PA Region has free loaner helmets available). Although a wide range of vehicles (from go-karts to purpose-built open wheel cars) compete in autocross, almost any production car is also welcome. Cars only compete against other, similar cars depending on its original performance and modifications. Cars are never near each other on the course and the speeds are relatively low.

To see what an event is like, please watch our ABC 23 video segment. If you're interested, come out and watch or participate!

2008 SPECIAL EVENTS

This year we'll be running a new 2 day Test & Tune to start out the season. As well, the Cone Killer Classic weekend event is back!

CPR-SCCA DYNO DAY

GodSpeed Dyno is going to have an open house and a dyno day for all autocross racers on April 21. The main goal of the day is to have some fun and also to expose people to the benefits of a chassis dyno. They are able to accomodate 10 cars in one day and are only charging $45 a car. This is $20 less than their usual low price of $65. This is for 3-5 pulls and you will receive color graphs with HP and Torque. This will be a great warmup for the April 28-29 test and tune.

If you're interested, please get in touch with Bart Grande (email or 814-280-2150) and let him know what time you would like to schedule your dyno appointment. The goal is to do one an hour with the first test at 8:00am and the last at 5:00pm. This allows him to keep a slow fun pace to the day.

Even if you don't plan on putting your car on the dyno come by to have some fun and hang out...AND this is a great way to support a CPR sponsor. Bart would like to make this an annual event so come out and show your support!

TEST & TUNE

This year's Test and Tune will be held over two days, April 19th and 20th. Saturday will be open to members of the Central PA Region only, whereas Sunday is open to all competitors as usual. Entry fees are the same as regular autocrosses ($30 for each day with a $5 discount for SCCA members). Saturday will be a traditional test & tune where particpants sign up to work for a one hour shift and divide their runs up throughout the rest of the day. We'll be giving out tickets for 6 runs to ensure everyone gets their driving time. Sunday will be staged as practice autocross (i.e. running in heats, 5 runs per driver). Neither day will count towards Summer or year-end points.

CONE KILLER CLASSIC

The Cone Killer Classic is the Central PA region's premiere Solo event, spanning 2 and a half days. The weekend begins with Friday "fun runs", followed by two full days of competition on July 19th and 20th. Each day is scored separately as an individual Summer Series event, with results counting towards the Summer Series Points. In addition, both days are combined for special Cone Killer Classic results, complete with separate trophies. As well as the Solo events, dinner is provided with the entry price on Saturday night, and camping is available at the event site. Pre-registration is required for the Cone Killer Classic (as opposed to our other autocrosses) and registration for each day is separate, so please keep that in mind if you plan to compete! To register, click the "pre-register" links next to CKC Days 1 and 2 in the schedule above.

Please click here for more information on the 2008 Cone Killer Classic.

POLICE CHALLENGE

The Police Challenge returns to our schedule for the 3rd time! We invite members of area law enforcement to compete at autocross. Officers choose a partner from a group of our regular autocrossers, and then the times of both competitors are combined. The fastest team (by PAX) is the winner!

If you're a member of law enforcement, or you know one who might be interested, please get in contact with Dave Mohar for details.

DRIVER'S CHALLENGE

The Driver's Challenge pits our region's class winning drivers against each other to determine the fastest driver without car concerns entering the equation. This is possible because a car is provided that ALL competitors drive. All drivers who won their class during the Summer Series are invited to run the Driver's Challenge.

SPECIAL CLASSES

This year we'll be running three index (PAX) based classes. The novice class (STN) is explained below.

This year we're introducing a new PAX-based class, the ladies index class (LIND). The ladies class is open to women only. The goal of the ladies class is to allow for the competition and comparison of times among just the region's female drivers. Ladies are, of course, not required to run in the ladies class.

Last year we began something known as the index class (IND) and it's back again this year. The index class (sometimes known in other regions as a pro or pax class) is a place where drivers can compete head to head against other drivers whose cars may be in different run classes. The goal of the index class is for a high level of competition among some of the region's top drivers.

When pre-registering, these special classes can be found in the Indexed Class (optional) box on the sign-up form.

LOCATION

Mid-State Regional Airport

Currently, all Autocross events held in the Central PA Region are located at the Mid-State Regional Airport, surrounded by the beautiful Black Moshannon State Park. Directions to the Airport available here.

Check the weather at the airport or the National Weather Service in State College.

REGISTRATION

Pre-registration is available (and encouraged!) for all autocrosses. To pre-register, just click the link next to the appropriate event in the schedule above. Pre-registration is not required (except for the Cone Killer Classic), so you can also register on-site on the day of the event. For questions about pre-registration with MyAutoEvents.com, contact the Registrar. Pre-registration for regular events closes at the end of the day on the Wednesday before the event. Cone Killer pre-registration closes at the end of the day on the Sunday one week before the event.

Pre-registering means you don't need to wait in the line at the registration table on the day of the event - you still need to check in with the registrars, but you can simply jump to the front of the line to do so (since check-in only takes a second).

If you pre-register for all of the 2008 Solo Summer Series events, both days of the Test & Tune will be provided free (you still need to be a CPR member to run the Saturday Test & Tune event). That's a $50 savings for CPR members! To pre-register for the whole season, you don't need to individually sign up for each individual event on MyAutoEvents.com. Simply send a check made out to CPR-SCCA for the amount of $235 (SCCA members) or $280 (non-members) to:

CPR-SCCA
210 W. Hamilton Ave.
PMB 299
State College, PA 16802

You may also pre-pay in cash or check at our April meeting (see the front page for the schedule), or contact the Registrar for other payment options. If mailing a check, include your name and the following information about the vehicle you'll be entering: year, make, model, color, run class and index class (if any). You can change your vehicle at any time, you are not required to use the same vehicle all season.

Save Five Bucks! Competing for the first time ever? If you've never autocrossed in the Central PA Region before, you'll receive the SCCA member price of $25 on your first event. If you're paying at the registration table on the day of the event, the registrar will automatically apply the discount.

TIPS FOR NOVICES

If you're coming to compete and this is your first time, please do a little research to help us out before you arrive. Since there are a wide range of cars that compete at an autocross, there are also a huge number of classes in which your car can be placed. The best way to find out what class your car is in is to look it up in the rule book (found below). If you're having difficulties, you can always list your car's year, make, model and modifications (if any) on the SCCA Forums or the SCCA-CPR Yahoo Group and ask for help with your Solo class.

If you're still having trouble figuring out your car class, don't worry. Someone at the event can help you figure it out.

In addition to your car's class, Central PA has a special class for novice drivers. This allows you to compete only against other novices, instead of seasoned competitors. Based on your car's real class (explained above) your time is modified using the PAX system to compare it against cars in other classes. This allows the drivers of (say) a Corvette and a Civic to compete in the same class and have their performance compared fairly. Anyone who drove in 4 or less Solo events in a previous year with the SCCA is eligible to run in the Central PA novice class. Although it's not required, running in the novice class is highly recommended for anyone new to autocross!

If you'd like to run in the novice class, please indicate that to the registrar on the event day. If you pre-register online, be sure to choose Street Tire Novice (STN) from the Indexed Class (optional) box on the entry form.

Finally, be sure to check out the novice handbook, found below.
